Second Opinions in medicine are frequent and can benefit both the physician and the patient or family. An additional opinion by another specialist can be helpful. In complex medical situations there can be several ways of analyzing a problem. Most commonly, two experts will agree and the patient will feel more confident.
Why Get a Second Opinion?
Sometimes an alternative diagnosis or treatment is recommended. Insurance companies will often require a second opinion to justify an expensive surgical procedure. Patients and families often want a second opinion, particularly when they feel uncertain. For some reason, in psychiatry, Second Opinions are not requested as often. Why not? Perhaps there is less of a tradition; or because it is perceived as a lack of trust; or because it is not easily available quickly and cost effectively.
We offer a Second (psychiatric) Opinion that can usually be accomplished within 10 days at a cost of $495 with an experienced board certified psychiatrist. This can be in person (preferred) or by telemedicine (video or telephone). The Opinion may include diagnosis and treatment (medication-psychotherapy-social/environmental) recommendations.
Some recent questions raised by people requesting Second Opinions are:
- Is there other medication that might be effective?
- Is this a “spectrum” (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) problem?
- Is my current psychotherapy of benefit?
Second Opinion is really for an additional opinion only. It is not intended to take over your treatment or to prescribe medication. It is a one time visit that can be accomplished quickly.
The fee is $495
- Review of past diagnosis, medications, environment, and more
- Not intended for treatment, but rather to gain a better understanding of overall mental health
